Tione Jayden Merritt, known artistically as Lil Tjay, was born in 2001 in the Bronx, New York. Raised by his mother in an environment marked by challenges and street violence, Lil learned early on that music could be a way to transform his life. As a teenager, he began developing his talent through writing rhymes, and it was during this period that “Resume,” one of his first tracks, was released on SoundCloud. Lil Tjay’s melodic talent quickly caught the attention of both the public and the music industry. The release of the song “Brothers” in 2018 was a turning point in his career, opening the door for a record deal with Columbia Records. During this time, he experimented with various sounds on tracks like “None of Your Love,” which helped solidify his unique style, blending trap, drill, and R&B elements. Songs like “F.N,” “Beat the Odds,” and “Calling My Phone” (in collaboration with 6LACK) cemented his international fame. Following albums such as *True 2 Myself* (2019), his debut, and *Destined 2 Win* (2021), which marked his breakthrough, *State of Emergency* (2020) was another important step in building his discography, featuring a sound more focused on drill, reflecting New York’s music scene. *222* (2023) reinforced his relevance in contemporary hip-hop, confirming his growth and ability to adapt to an increasingly competitive market. His music, often autobiographical, reflects both the struggles of daily life and his determination to overcome adversity. His blend of catchy melodies and heartfelt lyrics, present once again in his latest release *Farewell*, makes him one of the most authentic voices of the new hip-hop generation. Portuguese fans will have the chance to hear this talent live on July 5th, at the Sumol Stage during the 15th edition of the Sumol Summer Fest.
