Burna Boy is one of the artists worth keeping a close watch on in the current dance music scene. His success is due to his brand of dancehall, reggae, afro-beat and pop fusion. Born Damini Ogulu in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1991, he began to make music upon discovering the software FruityLoops at 10 years-old. Burna Boy spent some time in London after completing his education, however he returned to Nigeria shortly after, all the while working on creating his beats. He then decided to dive into his country’s music, going on to discover his dad’s and granddad’s music references, which included Nigerian reggae, dancehall and afro-beat. Burna Boy marries his culture with inevitable influences from the American culture. His first hit, “Like to Party” was produced by LeriQ and not long after that, in 2013, he released his debut album L.I.F.E., featuring Wizkid, Timaya, 2face and M.I., which was acclaimed by both critics and public. Following a few successful singles like “GBA2, “Streets of Africa”, “Xoni Baje” and “Sekkle Down”, Burna Boy delivered his third album, Outside. African Giant, his fourth album, saw the light in 2019, which was a fine year for the artist. This album was nominated for a Grammy as Best World Music Album; he was also awarded Best International Act in the BET awards and MTV’s Best African Act. In 2020, he released Twice as Tall and was again awarded a Grammy, this time as Best Global Music Album. Burna Boy is the artist to watch and audiences in Portugal are lucky to have their opportunity at Sumol Summer Fest in 2022.
